The Big Guide to Bathroom Design - Part 8

Personalized Towels

Hooks hold towels stenciled with each family member's name.

Claw-Foot Tubs

First manufactured in the United States in the late-19th century, claw-foot tubs remained popular until built-in bathtubs came into favor in the 1930s. Traditional tubs, like this one, are contoured at the end where you recline.

Bathroom Furniture

To adapt furniture for the bath, Holly Bradman of the Restored Homestead advises:

Check the piece's height. You'll need a shorter piece for a vessel sink (which sits on the counter like a bowl), a taller one for a drop-in.

Remove the backs of drawers to fit the sink and plumbing, then hinge the drawer fronts for access when needed.

To protect a wood top, apply several layers of gloss polyurethane and then a matte topcoat, so it's not overly shiny.

Shaving Bowl

An old shaving bowl from Homer Laughlin was set into a barley table to form a sink in the downstairs bathroom; the plumbing is hidden by a table skirt made from heirloom linens.
