Erin believes that life, and decorating, is "like weaving a tapestry. You don't buy a bunch of stuff at once," she explains. "Collect things you love, that are authentic to you, and your house becomes your story." The tale she spins is exuberant and fearless—one in which dishes line up in every color known to Roy G. Biv, and where each bed dons linens in no fewer than four prints, all Kool-Aid bright. "There's nothing wrong with layering pattern on pattern," Erin says. "Color brings vitality into your house. It's pure joy."
Wall art, $50 for both: Erin won these silk-screened Asian prints at a local auction. They wall they hang on is painted Babbling Brook by Olympic.
Bedding, $240: Pottery Barn's quilt and shams work well with pillows from thrift stores and Erin's own line.
Headboard, $300: This painted teak 1950s headboard came with two nightstands and a pair of dressers.
She also picked up inspiration from her mother, a vintage-store owner who considers secondhand bargains a means of self-expression—and a show of smarts. After all, old pieces aren't just inexpensive to replace, they're often better constructed. "I hate when people say they can't buy nice things until their children leave home," Erin says. "Our coffee table is so well-made that my girls dance on it! They think it's fun to live in a house where nothing is off-limits."
Hanging art, $15-$55 each: Antique paper parasols decorate Aryana's room.
Bed frame, $91: The old iron bed frame is a $15 tag-sale steal, spiffed up with a fresh coat of paint. The linens are from eBay and Goodwill; Erin designed the frog pillow.
Wall decor, $25: To round out this fun corner, Erin hung a 1950s home-ec poster, scored at a vintage shop. She painted the walls Cowslip 3 by Laura Ashley.
The Designer
In her home studio, Erin sits on a pleather scoop chair she unearthed at a nearby antiques shop for $15.
