How to Make Trees Storm Resistant

Staking young trees when planting means that they will tough it through rough weather.

1. Dig
Prepare the planting hole, then drive in the stake with a mallet before planting.

2. Tie

Tie the tree to the stake about half way up its stem. This lets the top of the tree bend, encouraging storm-resistant, anchoring roots.

Direct water to the roots by forming a 10- to 15cm-high ring of soil around the tree.
